Chapter Eight
The pain was a part of me. It was constant. It was throbbing. It was in my every breath and in my every step. Yet, fervently, I moved on. I hated and cursed every God and whispered every prayer on the path back. I walked because the wagon was full, and there was no desire to make space in case I actually did die along the trek back.
We had gotten the silver from the enemy guards' pay, and the weapons were made of good iron, as well as the leather armor. I had a satchel filled with onions, which I cut and squeezed, or rubbed, on a patch of cloth I kept against my wound. If it was my mind that willed the wound to not fester, or if there was some truth to the onions, I knew not.
I merely did not wish to die.
That singular driving force kept my legs moving. If the cart hadn't been as full as it was, I would have been left behind. Yet there was enough weight to make our return slower, and thus the pace good enough.
Atracta was truly a heavenly sight, and by the time we got a good deal out of what we had pillaged, I dimly realized I was now fifty silver coins richer. This meant I could repay my debt, and also get my wound checked.
Though between the two, I went with having my wound checked first.
Magic was a thing; Gods were a thing. Healing miracles were, thus, a thing. It was obvious, it had to be. There was no conceivable reason why it wouldn't work.
The problem was that things didn't work the way one might have expected them to, otherwise I would have seen those same 'healers' on the battlefields, perhaps flinging their miracles and keeping their soldiers alive in the thick of it.
My wound resumed bleeding as I feverishly paid the donation to the temple of a snake Goddess of whom I knew nothing, barring the fact that she was caring of eggs and known as a gentle one. I couldn't even pronounce her name, but I reckoned I didn't need to since a couple of other Freemen had gone there to get this or that problem fixed.
Though their problems had mostly been with aching teeth, or badly set bones, or stuff like that. If somebody lost a limb permanently, there was no magical miracle from the Gods to set them straight.
The priest, or priestess, gave me a trial to fulfill. That was how the miracles worked; the trial was never something one couldn't do, and most often than not I had a feeling they came up with the idea of the trials just to get rid of people who'd come and complain about any little thing.
Thus, I lay down bare chested on a flat stone surface as the midday sun proceeded to cook my skin. I had a few choice words for this kind of treatment, but I couldn't help but feel a serene sense
